Fill in the Blank Friday

1. The holiday season is  a time for being with friends and family, enjoying good food, and remembering the reason for the season.

2. Snow makes me extremely anxious.  Ever since I totaled my van several years ago, I HATE every flake that falls!  It stresses me out!

3. The best comfort food to eat when it's cold out is  soup or chili and crackers or chicken bog...

4. Winter is the best time for cozying up in front of the fire place to watch TV or read a book...

5. I can hardly wait for Christmas break from school.  That is when I start really decorating, shopping, and cooking....

6. When it comes to holiday gifts I prefer to give them. I prefer to donate to recognized charitable organizations in honor of someone in lieu of a gift.

7. If I were to rate my excitement about the holiday season on a scale from 1-10, I would say I am at about a   5 or so.  Since our children are teenagers, it's just not as exciting as it used to be.  I find a lot of my excitement now in remembering the real reason for the season....

Friday Fill-Ins

FFI

1. One of my favorite things about December that it is finally cold enough (on some days) to build a fire in the fireplace.

2. I love all of my Hallmark Wizard of Oz ornament(s)!

3. This is what I'm hoping for today/tonight: I hope that the gift that I plan to give is accepted.

4. What was that noise?

5. Ooh, a crow! (I know that sounds CRAZY!  It's an inside joke...)

6. Bells will be ringing!

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to quiet evening, tomorrow my plans include sleeping late and then taking the girls to get their nails done and Sunday, I want to go to church and just hang with my family!

Christmas Blog Challenge - Day 2

"Merry Christmas" or "Happy Holiday"??

Photobucket
(Link up with me and play along....it will be FUN!!)

As if Americans weren't divided enough, even in this season of celebrating peace and good will, people are split over whether they should say "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Holidays."  I respect individual beliefs, but any of these works for me. It's the sincerity behind the wish that means the most to me, not the words.
I grew up wishing people "Merry Christmas."  I wrote those words on my Christmas cards, and still do.  Until recently, it never actually occurred to me that the words "Merry Christmas" may be offensive to people, but since the season is fulled with cultural holidays falling within just a few weeks of each other, we have to confront this December dilemma.
I guess the bottom line is that I choose to say...
and probably always will....

It's OK Thursday

It's been a while since I linked up with Amber for
It's OK Thursday....
(go link up too!)

I've come to the conclusion that it's OK....

..that the majority of the fam did not eat supper at home last night, even though I cooked.  Leftovers = today's lunch at school :)

..to be pleasantly surprised at the amount on my TAP check...and pleasantly surprised I was!!  (Maybe I don't dislike TAP as much as I thought I did :)

..that I've already imagined where every dollar of my TAP check could be spent, and I've not even taken it to the bank yet!

..that I'm highly skeptical about the job that Charles just phoned me about.  It is a sales job, and I just don't see him as a salesman.  It also sounds too good to be true.  Time will tell.

..to be excited about my Christmas Blog Challenge.  Today is day one, so come on bloggy friends....join in.

..to be super PROUD of five of my students who won for their fire safety posters!  One student even won 3rd place in the district competition!  WTG Clifton!!

Alphabe-Thursday "D"

Once again, I am linking up with Jenny for
ALPHABE-THURSDAY...
Today's letter is D, one of my favorite letters!

Davis - Growing up, I was so proud to have the last name "Davis." Although it is a common name in the Chesterfield county area, and there are lots of other "Davises'" around, very few were related to us because my daddy was from the Columbia area and that's mainly where the other kin people lived. Still though, I think "Davis" is a good, strong name, and I'm proud it's a part of my heritage.

denim - There is nothing more comfortable to me than a well-loved, worn pair of jeans (shorts or long pants). I grew up wearing both Wrangler jeans and Levis, but today prefer a more feminine-cut, as long as they are denim....

dictionaries - I simply cannot live without a dictionary available at all times. I love words! Several years ago, I told Chuck that for the next gift-giving occasion, I wanted a new dictionary. He bought me a wonderfully current Merriam-Webster with plenty of words in it to satisfy my vocabulary-craving, for a while, anyway....

Dial soap - Dial soap was a given when I was growing up. Sometimes the color of the bar would change, but never the familiar name, shape, or scent. Since I've been a consumer and purchasing what I choose, I've tried many different brands, but always seem to come back to the standard.....good, ol' Dial soap!

Christmas Blog Challenge - Day 1

Day 1

(Link up with me and play along....it will be FUN!!)
Growing up, we had many Christmas taditions....rather we did a lot of the same things year after year evn though we never really referred to them as being traditional.

[one]
A week or so before Christmas, we started cooking....making candy, cookies, sausage balls, cheese biscuits, trash, salted pecans, etc. The candies were the BEST. Mama made mints, divinity, seafoam, pralines, chocolate fudge, peanut butter fudge, stuffed dates, and candied citrus rinds, just to name some of the confections. I like to do the same but on a much smaller scale than her.

[two]
There were two special ornaments that we always hung in the same place on the tree each year. One was a worn plastic angel and the other was a green aluminum stocking, and both were hung at eye level on the front side of the tree, with the angel above the stocking.

[three]
Cristmas Eve, each of us got to choose one present to open. We could pick any one we wanted, but only one....the rest had to wait until Christmas morning.

[four]
We always had a huge meal for Christmas lunch. Mama made turkey and dressing, rice and gravy, sweet potato casserole, corn pudding, cranberry sauce, and about a half dozen more delicious dishes too. We always had a lot of leftovers too, and somehow, Chandler could fit every dish into our refrigerator...she was known as the refrigerator packing queen!

Now that I'm grown and have a family of my own, we have tried to make our own traditions, which are reminiscent of my childhood days.

[five]
Each Christmas Eve night, we go to the candle-light service at our church and then come home and have a soup and sandwich supper for all of our family members who want to come over. This is such a cozy time of family love and togetherness.

[six]
On Christmas morning, our children stay in their rooms until we go to get them up. We come down the hallway as a family to see what Santa Claus has brought. Even though the children are teenagers, we still carry on the same routine each Christmas morning.

[seven]
Usually for lunch on Christmas day, we get together with Chuck's mama and sister and have a meal and exchange gifts. It's a quiet time with way too many gifts, but lots of fun!

[eight]
On Christmas evening, we go out to Bethel UMC to have supper with all of the Creech family. We used to go to Chuck's grandparents' house but since the family is so large, we moved the location to the church fellowship building. It's a lot of fun with so many good things to eat!

I've enjoyed this walk down memory lane and reflecting on our family Christmas traditions. I hope that the things that we do now make an impression on our children and they will continue some of them and make their own traditions when they are grown with families of their own.
