Here at school, we've been talking about fire prevention and drawing posters for the 2011 4-H Fire Safety contest.  The theme for this years contest is "Protect Your Family From Fire."  You can go "here" to see some of the posters my students have completed...

Since I live with two firefighters (my husband and son) and have fire, fire department and fire safety on my mind most every day, I decided to post some songs related to my guys, and some just plain fun fire songs in general....

9-11....Tenth Anniversary

This past Thursday, CountryDew over at Blue Country Magic posted a Thursday 13 listing, and it really hit home with me.  She and I have something in common...we are both wives of firefighters.  With her permission, and the above link to her blog page,

1. 3,010 - the number of deaths by fire

2. 1,348,500 - the number of fires


3. 17,050 - the number of civilian injuries caused by fire


4. $12,531,000,000 ($12.5 billion) - property loss by fire

5. 26,534,000 - the total number of calls to 911 for assistance

6. 50 - the average weight of a firefighter's gear (helmet, coat, boots, gloves)

7. 25 - the average weight of a firefighters SCBA gear (oxygen, breathing mask)

8. 75 - the average weight in pounds that a firefighter carries when rushing into a burning building

9. 24 - 30

10. 107 - the number of floors in New York City's World Trade Center's largest building



11. 8:50 a.m. on 09/11/2001 - the time an incident command was established by firefighters after a plane flew into the World Trade Center building. The first plane hit at 8:45 a.m.; firefighters were on the scene and entering the building within five minutes of the attack.

12. 9:59 a.m. on 09/11/2001 - the time the first building collapsed at the World Trade Center

13. 343 - the number of firefighters who lost their lives when both towers collapsed on 09/11/2001.

I am the wife of a firefighter. These people go out every day and risk their lives to save people. When you are running away in fear of your life, these people are running in to help you. Whether it's flood, tornado, fire, hurricane, downed powerlines, or a sore toe, when you call 911, these people come.

On the upcoming 10th anniversary of the attack on New York City, please remember the sacrifices of these brave men and women."

Miscellany Monday

Once again it is time to link up with Carissa for

MISCELLANY MONDAY... 

Our family had a wonderful weekend....very quiet and low-key.  L and MJ went on a Spanish field trip on Saturday and Charles worked at CCC, so Chuck and I just hung out together and talked....with no interuptions!! 

Sunday, we went to SS and church, and then Chuck and I went to Florence for lunch and to buy shoes for him.  We also walked around in the bookstore and then bought necessities at Wal-Mart. 

Sunday supper was Pizza Hut Veggie Lovers Pizza....YUM!!

Chuck and Charles have their monthly BFD meeting tonight, so that means no cooking for me!  The girls and I can just pick up something after their softball practice....or not!  We may just eat leftovers or noodles!

The weather has finally cleared up, but I heard a cold front is moving through tonight.  I am serioucly sick and tired of rain.  Bring on spring, please!!

Blogging Thru the Alphabet - F

Every day or so, I’m going to blog about things, people, ideas, concepts, places, etc. that start with a different letter of the alphabet. The letter for today is F….

Freestyle - I love my car....a 2006 Ford Freestyle.  It is by far the nicest car I've ever had and I've been totally satisfied with it.  Chuck ordered it from Meggs Ford, so it is a custom-made car just for me.

fingernails - Anyone who knows me knows that I was a nail-biter.  I bit my fingernails from the time I had teeth up until about two years ago, and for some unknown reason, I just stopped.  My nails are not beautiful, or long, or smooth, or strong, or perfect, but at least I can say that I'm not a nail-biter anymore!  Hooray for me!!

firefighters - I live with two brave, loyal firefighters...Chuck and Charles.  They are both on the Bennettsville and Wallace Fire Departments.  I'm very proud of them and their work in the community.  I cannot imagine what it would be like to walk into a burning building, and don't ever want to experience it, but thank GOD that there are those men and women who are willing to risk their lives daily to help others.

Facebook - What can I say?  I'm addicted.  I peruse the wall to see what people are talking about and usually find out something new each day.  I love to look at the new pictures and the funny status updates that are posted.  I have played the FB games like Farmville, Cafe World, etc., but really don't any more.  I just suddenly  lost interest in them.  I think that Facebook is a wonderful tool that brings people closer together and makes communication and interactions more convenient, even when people are separated by distance. 

Where were you?

On September 11, 2001, I was teaching at McColl Elementary/Middle School when the teacher across the hallway, Michelle, got a call saying that a jet had crashed into the World Trade Center in NY.  We turned on our classroom televisions and watched in terror as the second tower was hit.  It was a most awful day, and was so difficult to explain to the students that this was real, not a movie.

I remember the feeling I got when I realized that so many FDNY personnel were trapped inside the towers when they fell.  With Chuck being a firefighter, I knew that if he had been there, he would have probably been right there with the 343 heroes who were doing all they could to help those in need.  My heart swelled with pride and broke in sympathy for the families of those who gave all.
