sleeping late, watching movies, reading books, cooking

2. what time do you go to bed?

Later than I should...usually between 11:00 and 11:30, but I always have intentions to go much earlier...

3. how many magazines do you subscribe to?

5...Weight Watchers, Everyday with Rachael Ray, Reader's Digest, Guideposts, and
Southern Living....and I'm so behind on reading them....

4. did you sell all your belongings because you thought the world was ending yesterday?

No, actually I didn't think too much about it...

5. what's your beauty obsession?

no beauty obsession....just cleanliness...

6. if you could only wear one designer/brand for the rest of your life...what would it be?

I'm not very picky...I just like what's cotton, comfy, and easy to care for....

7. what's your summer must have?

a tan!

8. do you make weekly dinner menus?

No, but I probably should.  Life would be so much easier, but I'm not much of a planner.  We have school meetings, practices, ball games, etc. each afternoon, so sometimes we just have to pick up something on the run....

Happy Mother's Day

Happy Mother's Day, especially to all of the mothers in my family.  There are so many shining examples of motherhood in our family, beginning not with this current generation, but going back many, many decades. 

My beautiful mama, Harriet Hodges Evans Hodges Davis, was the absolute best mama ever.  Widowed with five children, she raised all of us to be caring and kind, independent and rational, educated and successful, and loving and forgiving.  She was my best friend, my confidant, and my role model.  She, without a doubt, made me who I am today.  I love her and miss her more than anyone will ever know, and look forward to the day when I see her again.

There are many other selfless, loving, beautiful mothers in my family also.  Here are just a few....

The woman who played one of television’s most-loved moms died on Saturday. Barbara Billingsley, known to generations as June Cleaver from Leave It to Beaver, passed away at her Santa Monica home at age 94.
June was the “ideal mother,” Billingsley said in an interview. But there have been plenty of other TV moms who fell far short of the mark June Cleaver set. That’s the topic of this week’s edition of the Sunday Seven.
Name seven TV moms you’re glad you didn’t have as your real mom.

1.  Lucy - She was too chaotic, and she would have surely embarrassed me as a teen.  Of course, I tend to embarrass my kids sometimes, so maybe that's just what moms do.

2.  Roseanne - She was way to rough around the edges for me....

3.  Lisa Douglas from "Green Acres" - Lisa was far to prissy and couldn't cook either! 

4.  Sheldon Cooper's mom on "The Big Bang Theory" - I'm a good christian, but her holier-than-thou attitude is too way over the top!

5.  Howard Wolowitz's mom, again from "The Big Bang Theory" - Just her tone of voice grates on my nerves....I definitely would not have tolerated a pushy Jewish mom like Howard's.

6.  Endora from "Bewitched" - Endora never called her son-in-law by his correct name and spent most of the time trying to sabotage Samantha’s mortal existence....just not prefect mom material, in my opinion.

7.  Mrs. Brown from the "Peanuts" TV shows -  Mrs. Brown gave her children far too much freedom to do what they wanted, and was never seen....parents have to be a presence in their children's lives....

Good news!!  It's finally raining here in SC!  It's been so long since we've had a drop.  Chuck cut the grass yesterday and when you looked out, all you could see was a dust cloud.  So thankful for all we've gotten today.....God, keep it coming!

We've had a busy day.  Charles cleaned up in his room, and L and MJ worked in their room.  The girls want to change their room around and I told them to do whatever they wanted to do....hope that was not a mistake.  Charles was kinda funny....he said that he'd not seen so much empty space on the floor in a long time!  I wish that they could keep their rooms half-way straight....fingers are crossed. 

Lawren wanted Mexican for supper, so instead of going out, she and I went to the gro. store and got the things we needed to cook some of her favorites at home.  She wanted chicken enchiladas, and I let her make them by herself.  They turned out pretty good too!  We also had soft shell tacos with lettuce, tomato, onion, black olives, jalapenos, sour cream, salsa, etc....  We also make Spanish rice.  MJ fixed herself a plate of nachos.  I think everyone enjoyed "International Night" at the Black house... :)

We are all waiting for the premier of The Amazing Race.  I did not watch the first or second season of this series, but have enjoyed the past few years of shows.  I really like pretty much all of CBS's reality shows...Survivor and Big Brother are my FAVORITES!!

I have big plans for the coming week.  I want to finish up my 101 in 1001 list so I can start working on striking off what I've accomplished.  I am going to help Chuck get his office straightened out at MCHS.  It's homecoming week, so there are lots of activities planned that L and MJ will want to participate in.  I'm also going to work a little along on getting ready for Friday night's Post Game on Main.

Well, it's about time for my show...more later maybe...

"O Lord, You are our Father.  We are the clay, you are the potter.  We are all the work of your hand."  Isaiah 64:1

Today was music and education ministry Sunday. Everyone who participates in musical programs and who teach Sunday school were recognized.  Millie gave all of us teachers and assistants a tote bag with the potter's hands pictured, and referred to Ben's sermon from last week.  All in all, it was another wonderful worship service at FUMC this morning.

Charles played golf in the Marlboro Country Club member/guest tournament with Luke.  When he came home today, he told us that he and Luke came in second place!  I'm really proud of him!

Chuck is finally home after a super busy weekend of teaching in Florence.  He is worn out and trying to catch a power nap before supper.  He is such a hard worker and I appreciate him so much.

L, MJ, and the Moody girls are out in the neighborhood being social.  I'm sure that L and MJ have make-up work to do before going to school tomorrow.  Missing two days of school is unusual for them, but they'll easily catch up with their classmates.

Not much else happening here at the Black household.....maybe more later~~

What a beautiful Sunday morning!  The weather is cool, and there's a soft breeze blowing....all is right with the world!

Got up early and started lunch so we could have it after church.  I made chicken breasts and thighs wrapped in bacon and then covered with a creamy sauce.  It had to bake for 3 hours, so I had to get it in by 9:30 so it would be ready when we got home.  I also cooked a package of the field peas that Charles shelled over the summer while working his job at the produce stand.  A pot of rice and another vegetable  rounded out our delicious lunch.

There were not too many people in church today...Labor Day holiday I guess.  Ben had a good message and then we had communion.   

I'd like to include the prayer of confession as it is printed in our Sunday bulletin:   

Gracious God, search our hearts.
Root out the thoughts and plans that draw us away from You.
Forgive us, O God,
     for clinging to the things of our lives;
     for holding onto our need for control;
     for denying the cross you would have us bear;
     for choosing paths that seem easier or safer
          when You call us to the path of discipleship.
us back to You, and shape us in Your image, that we may be Your people --
     a people that bears the cross with love and compassion.  Amen

Our day started out like most other Sundays....waking up around 9:00 a.m. and getting ready for Sunday school and church.  Chuck was not working today so he was able to teach our Sunday school class.  We had a really good discussion, but only six people in attendance.  It's really a shame that more were not there.


After church, we just picked up some lunch and ate as a family at home.  Right after we ate, Chuck and Charles went to play golf, and Lawren and MJ went over to Kasey's to hang out for a while.  I lay down for a few minutes and probably dozed off because next thing I knew, L and MJ wanted me to take them to Christ UMC for their church picnic.  Chuck and Charles came home around 5:00, and we went to pick up the girls so we could go to Fatz in Cheraw to have supper for Charles' birthday.

We're all home now....watched Big Brother and now vegging out in front of the computer....Charles is in bed, the girls are studying, bathing, and getting ready for school, and Chuck is doing paperwork at the kitchen table.  Everything is calm and peaceful, just like I like it...a rare occurrence in our home...
